Hive
Hive is a unique twist on the game of chess. It is a two player strategy game that is all about protecting your queen. Except in this game, you have a bunch of different insects that have different moving abilities that you use to protect your queen bee, and encircle your opponent’s. The reason I love this game is because it is quick to play, easy to travel with, and the tiles are heavy enough to not fly away if you play outside. In fact, Eric and I took this game with us to a star gazing event as well as a wine tasting. Not to mention, it comes with its own carrying bag which makes it easy to keep in my purse or luggage for when we travel.
Rivals for Catan
Rivals for Catan is a two player version of the classic game that is only made up of cards instead of tiles. For that reason alone I like this game because again it is easy to travel with and set up. I also like that this is a resource collection game that is based on dice rolls. The combination of luck, skill, and strategy makes this a fun game to play on date night.
Spirits of the Wild
I love the art of this game! This cute strategy game is simple to learn and beautiful to look at. The concept of the game is almost like Yahtzee but with colored gems. The main concept is to grab the different colored gems from the bowl to complete the sets listed out on your board. The fun aspect of this game is the ability to stop your opponent with the coyote by placing it on one of their sets that they are trying to complete. This stops them from placing any more gems on that area of the board and forces them to find a way to move it from their board to your board. In the end, neither of you are upset that you lost because you had fun playing it.
Fox in the Forest
This game is very similar to Euchre (which is a staple game in Michigan) in the sense that it’s a trick taking game. However, the twist here is that if you take all 13 tricks, you get 0 points. And if you take 0-3 tricks, you get 6 points. It is a very cool balance of trying to take some tricks but not all of them. And the art on the cards is so beautiful that you’ll forget it’s your turn.
Codenames Duet
Codenames Duet is a co-operative game instead of a competitive game. Which means that instead of playing against each other, you both play against the game itself. Eric and I really love playing co-op games because it always us to work together and strategize on how to beat the game. In this particular game, you have 25 words laid out in front of you, and your partner has to give you clues as to which words are your teams words. The tricky part is that you could end up guessing the wrong words which could cause you to lose the game so your partner has to give good clues to help you out. It’s a fun word association game that helps you get inside the mind of your partner.
