1. Blankets
You can never have too many blankets! If you want the room your decorating to look homey and cozy, just drape a blanket across the bed/sofa/chair. It’s also an easy way to add a pop of color or pattern to the space.
2. Throw Pillows
Throw pillows always add a comfort factor and a personal touch. It can also tie your theme together whether you have a coastal theme or a geometric theme. The possibilities are endless. I also love to switch my pillows out for different holidays to add more charm to our home.
3. Candles
Candlesandles add a relaxing feel to any room whether you choose to use real or flameless. The flicker of the light makes the room more romantic. They also can be scented which helps add a pleasing aroma to your home that will feel more inviting. I love to get scented candles that remind me of my favorite memories such as the smell of cookies around Christmas or pumpkin spice in the fall.
4. Books
Books are a great way to fill an empty shelf or add some interest to a table. They can also tell your guests a little bit more about your personality. One of my favorite design tips is to get old books from a thrift store or second hand bookstore and face them so that you only see the pages, not the spine. This is a great way to fill the shelves while keeping it neutral
5. Baskets
Baskets and totes are a dual purpose decoration. Not only do they fill an empty space but they also serve as a organization tool. I love to use them in open closets and bookshelves. It adds a clean look to the space while also hiding items that you don’t want your guests to see.
6. Artwork
Don’t forget about your walls! There are many different options when it comes to artwork. Whether you choose to frame family photos, support local artists and photographers, or hang up some fun metal art, the possibilities are endless! Try using a combination of the above and create your very own gallery wall to add your own personal stamp on your walls. Or you can always do what I did and purchase a pre-made gallery wall set (like this one from Bed Bath and Beyond) and follow their template. Whatever you choose to do, made sure that the artwork in each room relates to each other and the theme of the room. Artwork is like the jewelry of the room!
7. Faux Plants
Studies show that people are happier when they have a connection to the outdoors. Now if you have a green thumb, then you would be the perfect candidate to add house plants to your rooms. But if you have a black thumb like me, then faux plants are the way to go! You can add the look of outdoors without the maintenance. And who doesn’t love being outdoors?
